Ohto is a Japanese writing instrument manufacturer established in 1919 as the ink and dye maker Nakata-Ohka-do, which released the first Japanese-made ballpoint pen in 1949. It pioneered water-based ballpoint ink in the 1960s, effectively creating the rollerball category, and today makes fountain pens, rollerballs and mechanical pencils, taking the name Ohto in 1974.
